SUMMIT COUNTYCleanup completedThe Ohio Environmental Protection Agency has issued a covenant not to sue the owners of a 101-acre polluted site in Barberton and Norton that is being redeveloped.The voluntary cleanup was completed by D.S. OH Limited Partnership, MBS Chem Inc. and David Street Partnership for the former Midwest Rubber property at 745 Norton Ave.Under state rules, the three parties hired a certified environmental professional to assess the sight, identify polluted areas and remediate the contamination to a level that will allow commercial or industrial reuse of much of the property.The brownfield site was a sand-and-gravel quarry before 1928 and a rubber reclamation and new products manufacturing through 2000.There are restrictions of using the groundwater and building in the old quarry.AKRONWorkshop offeredAKRON: The International Institute of Akron, which helps immigrants become American citizens, will hold a free Citizenship Assistance Workshop from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at 207 E. Tallmadge Ave.Immigration counselors will assist eligible applicants in applying for citizenship. The program is funded by the Department of Homeland Security. For more information, visit www.iiakron.org.wadswoRthHearing on housingWADSWORTH: The Planning Commission will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m. Monday on a proposal to revamp the city’s regulations concerning senior housing.Proposed regulations will provide for some types of this housing in commercial districts. Under the present ordinances, senior housing is confined to residential areas.Specific regulations concerning passive recreation areas including walkways and water features are also in the proposal.CANTONTrain ride curtailedCANTON: The Polar Express won’t be running from Canton this year.The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad on Friday announced that the holiday train will not run from Canton’s Lincoln Highway Station.Canton was included in the Polar Express runs starting in 2007.Departures from Akron’s Northside Station and the Rockside Station in Independence will continue, as they have for the last 18 years. Those tickets go on sale to the public on Oct. 3The railroad said the decision to stop Canton runs of the Polar Express was based in “numerous factors including current economic conditions and operational difficulties.”The railroad, based in Boston Township, hopes to resume the Canton runs of the Polar Express in 2012, said Steven Wait, president and chief executive officer of the railroad.CUYAHOGA VALLEYDiesel spill in parkA diesel fuel spill occurred Friday at the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad’s Fitzwater Maintenance Yard in the north part of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.About 200 gallons spilled during refilling of a diesel tank at the yard in Valley View, and between 50 and 100 gallons reached the nearby Cuyahoga River, officials said.The spill was contained and the cleanup is under way, officials said.The National Park Service was directing the investigation with assistance from the Independence Fire Department and the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.A number of other government agencies were also involved.
